Rick Segal is an unusual Venture Capitalist. Rick wrote a blog today "A VC rant with an opportunity" and Doc Searls follows up with "Disrupting the VC business".
Rick spent several years at Microsoft and other companies before entering the VC world. I wrote about Rick's approach to the VC process in "12 steps to VC success". Rick's approach might be different because he is relatively new to the business and doesn't have a giant portfolio to manage, or maybe because he is located in Canada, but somehow I think Rick will always be an approachable down to earth guy.
One thing I like about Rick, other than his wild sense of humor, is that he will take a 30 minute "no harm-no foul" meeting with anyone who has an idea and wants to start a company. He doesn't require a referral, or previous success starting a company.
To get a better idea of how Rick approaches the VC game read the "12 steps to VC success" which is essentially my spin on Rick's 12 step process. Most VCs follow many of the same steps, although it is not always clear to the entrepreneur where they are in the process.
