Google acquires JotSpot

Google has acquired JotSpot. Details not disclosed. JotSpot is a wiki based provider of office productivity applications. Joe Kraus and Graham Spencer, cofounders of Excite, founded JotSpot in 2003. Gspot

SocialText, another wiki application company, founded by Ross Mayfield, says " This is another great validation of the category we helped start. While Jot took their product in a different direction, focusing on SMBs, being a proprietary development platform and developing other apps, we chose to focus specifically on being the open, best-of-breed wiki. This acquisition will further commoditize the low end of the market.  Something we have  encouraged with our Open Source versions of both Socialtext and SocialCalc."

Let me back up. For those of you not familiar with Wiki technology, here is a definition from Wikipedia "it is a type of website that allows the visitors themselves to easily add, remove and otherwise edit and change some available content, sometimes without the need for registration."  Wikipedia is a wiki based encyclopedia. For those of you interested in trivia, wiki comes from the Hawaiian word "wiki wiki" which means "quick quick".

Wiki based applications use the underlying wiki real time editing functions to add collaboration capability to things like spreadsheets, word processors, project management systems, and more. The cool thing about wikis is that anyone can contribute and their changes are instantly seen by everyone. Great for real time editing and reviewing of a document, spreadsheet, or presentation. Wikis take collaboration to the next level...and it looks like Google is taking JotSpot to yet another level.

Comments

A comment from the (very) cheap seats....offerings like these can only help microsoft evolve into a REAL enterprise player. Microsoft's current enterprise footprint is really a bunch of point apps scaled multiple times across the business (instead of creating real automation or collaboration value). Sharepoint is certainly changing that, but partners/competitors like these can only help to accelerate the change.

What is the guesti-mate price tag? Or as Zillow says - Zestimate! ;-)
