Google is testing banner ads and post roll video ads on about 2,000 premium videos on it Google Video site. The test puts a banner ad on the top or bottom of the video frame while the video is running, and then runs a post roll 15 or 30 second video ad.
Garett Rogers at ZDnet has a great story including screen shots of the banner ads and post roll video. The screen shot below is borrowed from Garett's story on ZDnet. You can see the "LowerMyBills.com" advertising banner over the top of the video frame. At this point advertisers decide which videos they want their ads to appear with.
Hmmmm...I wonder if the video content owners will want some control over which ads appear with their content?
Both the content owner and the advertiser have brands they want to promote and protect. I am sure you can imagine advertisers running ads on competitors content, or worse, some intimate, provocative, ads running on some prominent name brand videos.
Google splits the ad revenue with the content owner. Users could also avoid the ads by paying a fee for the content and downloading it to their device.
It is important to note that this test is for streaming video only. Meaning, you don't download the video, you just watch it as it is streamed.
Once the premium video content finishes the advertiser runs a 15 or 30 second "post roll" video ad, which will probably include a link to click for action.
Google has long resisted banner ads, and especially animated gifs and videos. But, in an effort to keep revenues humming along they are now taking banners and video ads "where it makes sense". There are lots of big brand advertisers who spend lots of money on display ads. This could open up a whole new set of advertisers to Google...or it could pollute Google's clean fast user experience. Time will tell.
