Two weeks ago I got the Google CR-48 Notebook. Louis Gray just got one for Christmas and wrote a positive review. My initial reactions can be summarized as; Fast, instant on, always connected, and so simple a grandmother could use it. This past week I started looking at the Chrome Web Store for interesting apps and extensions.
The Chrome Web Store, which just opened three weeks ago, has over 2,000 apps and over 10,000 extensions and themes. I have heard that the top 15 apps have been "downloaded" 1.5 million times. Pretty impressive.
There are apps for Communication, Education, Entertainment, Family, Games, Lifestyle, News & Weather, Productivity, and Utilities.
I looked for a screenshot app to capture images for this blog post...written on my CR-48 Notebook, using the Typepad web interface. I found several good choices. I tried Awesome Screenshot and Screen Capture by Google. Both worked very well.
There are also cool apps for News like USA Today, NPR, New York Times, and ESPN. In the entertainment category there were tons of apps like ClickerTV, CityVille, and Rhapsody. There are thousands more apps that I have yet to discover.
Nothing but the web - Using the Chrome CR-48 Notebook with Chrome Web Apps is fast and easy. One thing to remember, you aren't really "downloading" apps. The apps are in the Cloud. You are just downloading a shortcut to the app in the Cloud. This is what web computing is all about. We already do this with Gmail, Google Apps, Google Maps, and lots of other apps that we use everyday.
My new years resolution for 2011 is to go totally to the Cloud. No client applications on a laptop. I have basically been living this way for several years anyway. So, I will still keep my MacBook Pro as a backup, but I want to experience "nothing but the web".
